What is Microneedling
Microneedling, also called skin needling, collagen induction therapy (CIT), and percutaneous collagen induction (PCI), more commonly known as derma-rolling & is a minimally invasive skin rejuvenation procedure that involves the use of a device that contains fine needles.
During the microneedling treatment, slim, fine needles push below the surface of the skin, what is called a micro-wound. The gentle stimulation of fibroblasts promotes natural induction of collagen and elastin, without the stress of pain and lengthy downtime associated with ablative treatments. Microchannels, resulting from the needles piercing through the skin, aid in infusing therapeutic serums for greater penetration and enhancement of overall efficacy. Medical studies have shown that microneedling can increase serum absorption by as much as 1,000 times.
This treatment improves your skin by increasing the production of collagen, facilitating natural repair and growth, and making the skin stronger and thicker. The new collagen fills depressed scars and wrinkles from the bottom up, lifting the depression so they are level with the surrounding skin. This process takes two to three months to produce visible results and helps thicken thinner, fine skin types.
Pre-Treatment Tips
Avoid Accutane in the six months prior to beginning your treatment sessions.
Do not use topical agents that may increase the sensitivity of your skin such as retinoids, exfoliants, topical antibiotics or acids 5-7 days prior to your treatment.
Do not take anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen, Motrin, or Advil for at least 3 days prior to your microneedling session. These will interfere with the natural inflammatory process that is critical for your skin rejuvenation.
Avoid IPL/Laser procedures, unprotected sun exposure, or sunburn for at least 2 weeks prior to your procedure.
No waxing, depilatory creams, or electrolysis to the area being treated for 5-7 days prior.
Do not shave the day of the procedure to avoid skin irritation. If there’s dense hair present in the treatment area, shave the day before you arrive for your appointment.
If you’re prone to cold sores, take an antiviral agent for 2 days prior to and the day of the treatment.
Avoid blood thinning agents for one week prior because bruising is a common side effect of microneedling.
Recovery
The recovery is not more than 7 days, and for most patients it is typically around 3-4 days. The recovery process entails avoiding direct sun exposure, using serums (Hyaluronic acid, Vitamin A, C & E), and no hot showers. A day after the treatment, pure mineral makeup may be worn to cover the redness and to assist in healing. It is recommended to use physical sunscreen (ideally zinc-based) products. For a few days, individuals should avoid chlorinated swimming pools and activities that cause excessive perspiration.
Immediately post-treatment, there is a redness to the skin like that of mild sunburn. A puffy facial appearance or slight bruising is common on day 1.
For the first 3-5 days, the skin may feel dry and tight. By days 4-6, there is minimal swelling, and any bruising is close to disappearing. Skin flaking is common at this point. By day 7, there are very few visible signs of the procedure, and individuals can appear in public in confidence.

What to Expect Afterwards
It is normal for your skin to be red for a few hours after the treatment. In some cases, the redness could persist for as long as two days. A little bit of itchiness is also possible due to the release of histamines. Dry skin, tightness, and tenderness are all common side effects. Avoid direct sunlight immediately after the treatment and be sure to use natural sun protection (SPF 30+) if you do need to venture outdoors.
The increased collagen production starts to take effect after around 48 hours (about 2 days), although clearly, visible improvement should begin to become noticeable after about 3-6 weeks (about 1 and a half months) into the treatment course, so it is important to be patient and consistent. You will soon notice benefits, with cumulative ongoing improvement over time – smoother, fresher-looking, skin with a more even tone.
We recommend taking before and after pictures at 0, 3, 6, 12, and 24 weeks (about 5 and a half months) so you can keep track of your progress. It can be very satisfying to see just how far you have come!
Post-Treatment Care
DO NOT EXPOSE YOURSELF TO THE SUN – After you have undergone your microneedling procedure, stay out of the sun and do not apply any sunscreen, due to the toxins that may be contained in the lotion. Post-procedure, the skin channels are completely open, and any toxins contained in topical applicants may be harmful to you.
DO NOT USE ANY “ACTIVE INGREDIENT» SKIN PRODUCTS – Post-procedure, avoid any skincare product that has active ingredients. These commonly include things like Alpha Hydroxy Acids, Retinol, and other similar agents. The skin will be sensitive, and these products will only irritate it further.
AVOID THE USE OF MAKEUP AFTER TREATMENT – You must let your skin “breathe” and recover for 24 hours after the procedure. The skin channels are open, and using a makeup brush can penetrate the pores, especially if they are very thin, causing further irritation. Using a makeup brush that has been used before can contaminate the skin and, consequently, lead to infections. Wait for 24 to 48 hours (about 2 days) before you apply face makeup to give your skin the necessary recovery time.
USE A COOLING FACE MASK – After you have undergone microneedling, you may experience some skin inflammation or redness. Using a cooling mask will help reduce the inflammation or redness of the skin, giving you more comfort.
USE AN ANTIOXIDANT SERUM – Antioxidant serums have properties that assist in healing the skin. Serums assist in soothing the skin and further reduce irritation.
AVOID SWEATING – As you sweat, the pores of your skin will reopen, and the bacteria on your skin could enter the skin punctures. This can lead to either a reaction or infection.
DRINK WATER – It is important to stay hydrated before and after your procedure to help your skin heal and rejuvenate faster.
