Welcome Mavens

Did you ever wonder where the trend of Spray Tanning came from?  Well, stay tuned, because today we are going to take a deep dive into its origins and what could be up and coming in the industry in the future.

Early Days:  The Birth of Spray Tanning

Initial Concepts (Late 1960s – 1970s)

The earliest methods of spray tanning involved using a mist of dihydroxyaceton (DHA), a colourless sugar that reaats with the amino acids in the skin to create a tan-like appearance.  This was a relatively rudimentary process with inconsistent results.

Increased Popularity (1980s – 1990s)

Spray tanning became more popular as people sought after alternatives to sunbathing.  Early spray tanning machines were bulky and often left steaks or an uneven finish.  This period also saw the introduction of various DHS formulations.

Technological Advances:  Refining the Process

Introduction of Airbrush Technology (Early 2000s)

Airbrush tanning emerged as a more refined method.  This technique used a handheld airbrush gun to apply a fine mist of DHA, allowing for a more even and customizable application.  This period marked a significant improvement in the quality and precision of spray tans.

Enhanced Formulations (MId-2000s)**

DHA formuations improved with the addition of moisturizers, bronzers, and other ingredients to enhance the tan’s appearance and longevity.  Companies began to offer a range of shades and solutions tailored to different skin sypes and preferences.

Modern Innovations:  Customization & Convenience

Automated Booths and Technology (2010s – Present)**

The introduction of automated spray tanning booths revolutionized the industry.  These booths offer a more consistent and hands-free application, with options for customizable settings such as intensity, colour, and drying time.  They’ve become popular in tanning salons for their efficiency and ease of use.

Organic and Natural Ingredients (2010s – Present)

A growing demand for natural and organic products led to the development of DHA formulations free from synthetic additives.  These products often include skin-nourishing ingredients like aloe vera, green tea, and vitamins.

Precision and Personalization (2020s)

Advanced technology has brought even more personalization to spray tanning.  Some modern systems use skin analysis to tailor the solution to the individual’s skin tone and type.  Additionally, mobile spray tan services have become popular, brining the convenience of spray tanning directly to clients’ homes.

Eco-Friendly Solutions

As sustainability becomes a priority, the industry is seeing a shit towards eco-friendly practices.  This includes biodegradable spray tan solutions, recyclable packaging, and cruelty-free products.

Future Directions:  Innovations on the Horizon

Advanced Formulations:

Continued research into better DHA formulations and alternative tanning agents that offer even more natural-looking results and improved skin benefits.

Smart Technology:

The integration of smart technology for real-time adjustments based on skin condition and environmental factors.

Sustainability:

Increased focus on sustainable and eco-friendly practices, both in product formulation and packaging.
